An enthusiastic, positive, and knowledgeable staff that has the ability to inspire is what makes the difference between Trashcan camps and the others. We employ lacrosse enthusiasts who have the ability to teach the fundamental skills of lacrosse as well as the ability to work with kids. We have our share of MLL players, NLL players, College Coaches, High School Coaches, College All-Americans working at each camp and clinic, but what is most important is PASSION! You will find our staff members extremely friendly and willing to talk lacrosse with any parent or player.
Peter Lawrence enters his fifth year as head coach of the University of Hartford lacrosse team in 2010. There has been a tremendous youth movement over the last two years. Lawrence has been able to recruit some of the best young lacrosse players from the Northeast and Canada.
Lawrence’s crowning achievement to this point has been a historic win of 6th ranked UMBC. The Hawks pulled off the 11-4 upset over the Seawolves on Al-Marzook Field. Lawrence, formerly the head lacrosse coach at Division III Elmira College, is the seventh head coach in the program’s Division I history. In his first season he led the Hawks to more wins than the previous two years combined.
Lawrence began his coaching career as an assistant at Whittier College, where he directed the Poets’ defense in their first two seasons of NCAA competition. Whittier during and after his tenure was able to become a Top DIII program. He spent one season as an assistant for the club team at the University of New Hampshire, guiding the Wildcats to a Pioneer League Championship and a berth in the national tournament. Lawrence spent three seasons as head coach at Elmira, where he led the Soaring Eagles to an overall record of 8-6 in 2005, only the fifth winning season in school history. Lawrence has had the privilege to coach many Canadians over his career including seven that have gone on to play in the NLL.
In addition to Trashcan lacrosse, Lawrence directs Powell Brothers Lacrosse Camps and GameBreaker Lacrosse camps. He travels extensively over the summer while running camps in Atlanta, Oregon, California, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Lawrence has also conducted live field demonstrations at the 2006 & 2007 US Lacrosse National Conventions.
A standout player at Roanoke College and recently elected to its 2008 Hall of Fame class, Lawrence led the Maroons to three straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Lawrence was a three time All-Conference selection. A two time All-American selection, as well as received recognition as the 1998 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Played in the 1998 North-South all-star game. He was drafted by the MLL’s Bridgeport Barrage in the league’s inaugural season (2001). He graduated from Roanoke College in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education.
Andy Hayes - Director
Hayes is only the 3rd Head Coach at Episcopal Academy. He just completed his fifth year and led the Churchmen to their 3rd consecutive 10 win season. His team finished 13-8 in PA and finished second in the Inter-Ac. Andy Hayes began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Penn Charter. He coached there for two years before heading over to rival Episcopal where he served as the Offensive Coordinator and JV Head Coach before being named Head Varsity Coach in 2004. Episcopal Academy competes in one of the toughest conferences in the country, the Inter-Ac. Andy Hayes is currently the director of the GameBreaker Lacrosse camp in Lake Forest, IL. He travels extensively over the summer while running camps in Atlanta, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Hayes has also conducted live field demonstrations at the 2006 & 2007 US Lacrosse National Conventions. In addition to his coaching duties at Episcopal, Hayes helps direct the Ashbee Lacrosse Club’s spring tryouts and conducts clinics in the Conestoga Youth program. He has also presented at the Philadelphia School District Lacrosse Clinic for 3 years. He has most recently been elected as President of the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association and is currently helping reshape the organization’s purpose and mission. A standout lacrosse and soccer player at Trinity College, he was selected for All-NESCAC honors in both sports. In addition to his athletic career, Hayes graduated from Trinity with a B.S. in Biology and currently teaches freshmen and sophomore Biology at Episcopal. Will Gibbs - Coach Grew up in Maryland and graduated in 1996 from St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis. In 1996, the St. Mary’s Saints were 17-0, MIAA “A” Champions and were voted #1 in the nation according to Lacrosse Magazine. Ryan Martin - Goalie Coach
Back for his third season as a full-time assistant coach for the Golden Flyers, Ryan Martin has a strong lacrosse background as both a player and as a coach. Martin was an assistant coach at Rensselaer in 2006 before being appointed at Nazareth later that fall. He is also enrolled in Nazareth's Master of Science in Management program. A native of Amherst, Mass., Martin served as the Red Hawks' defensive coordinator and helped organize recruiting in '06. The Red Hawks finished 7-10 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League. Eric Gregg - Goalie Coach
Eric J. Gregg began coaching goalies in 2003 at Lower Merion HS in
Ardmore, Pa. He then moved on to coach defense and goalies at Penn
Charter HS in Philadelphia from 2004-2008 and helped guide the Quakers to the
PA State Playoffs each year and the 2008 PA State Playoff Final Four. Gregg now serves as the Head Boys’ Lacrosse Coach at St. Joseph’s
Preparatory School in Philadelphia.
In his first year the team earned its first #1 state ranking on 4/25/09
and finished ranked #3 in PA with a record of 16-2, the highest finish in
program history. Ten members of the class of 2009 moved on to play lacrosse in
college. Gregg and his program
were awarded the George A. Kruse Award for sportsmanship given by the Greater Philadelphia
Lacrosse Officials Association. Gregg also founded the non-profit organization Lacrosse, Education,
Attitude, Perseverance, and Success (L.E.A.P.S.) whose mission is to enrich the lives of youth through
lacrosse and education, as well as instill the importance of a healthy and
active lifestyle. All of which will, in turn, help them develop a positive
worldview. L.E.A.P.S. aims to show that with hard work on and off the field,
anyone can be successful. John Basti - Coach
Jonathan Basti joined the Hartford coaching staff in the summer of 2008 and will serve as top assistant under head coach Peter Lawrence. He spent last season as the top assistant at Lafayette College and the previous three years as an assistant at Fairfield University. Basti served as defensive coordinator and face-off coach in his one year at Lafayette. He was also heavily involved in both recruiting and scouting. Lafayette finished with an overall record of 4-9 in 2008.
Garett Rosecrans - Coach
A Syracuse, NY native, Garett attended Liverpool High School, Herkimer Community College and Butler University. He received his B.S in Physical Education and Health from Butler and was the Assistant Lacrosse Coach there from 2001- 2004. Garett was the 9th overall selection in the 2008 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Supplemental Draft. He is currently the Head Coach at Wando High School.
Tom Harris - Coach
A New Canaan, CT native, Tom attended New Canaan High School and The University of Hartford. He received his B.A. in Art History. Tom was a two time team captain for the Division 1 University of Hartford lacrosse team. He is the founder of Top Left Lacrosse and part of the LOWLAX coaching staff.
Went on to play at Washington College in Chestertown, MD. Played Long stick midfield, SS D-Middie and Close defense. Played in two national championship games, losing in OT in 1997 and winning the DIII National Championship in 1998. Graduated in 2000, and was named Team MVP his senior year.
Coached at St. Mary’s Annapolis as a Varsity asst. in 2001. The season was highlighted by a 9-8 victory over The St. Paul’s School (Md.), who were ranked as the #1 team in the country at the time.
Head coaching career began at Cape Henry Collegiate School in Virginia Beach, VA. In 2004, led the Dolphins to their first ever DI State Championship in any sport. That same year was named “Coach of the Year” for Virginia.
Arrived at Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia in the Fall 2005. Has been the Defensive Coordinator for the Churchmen, guiding the defense to historic wins over EA’s rivals in the highly competitive Inter Ac League.
Teaches at EA in the Middle School. He and his wife, Alice, live in Havertown PA.
Martin also has experience as an assistant coach at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia in 2005 and as an instructor at the Powell Brothers Lacrosse Academy for three summers.
As a player, Martin was a standout at Ithaca College, graduating in 2003 with a degree in Business Administration. He was a four-year member of the Bombers' lacrosse team and was team captain for two seasons. He earned All-America honors in 2002 and 2003 as the team's starting goalie and was named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year in '02.
A former player for the Stags, Basti returned to Fairfield as an assistant coach for the 2005 season. Involved in day-to-day operations of the program, he worked as assistant offensive coordinator and oversaw the face-off men. In 2005, Fairfield ranked as high as 15th in the national ranking on its way to a Great Western Lacrosse League championship. In 2007, the Stags reached a program-best #12 ranking.
Prior to Fairfield, Basti served as the head coach at Eastern Connecticut State University from 2002 to 2004. While directing the Warriors, he posted a 22-9 career record while winning a pair of Little East Conference championships and earning two NCAA Tournament berths. He also worked as an assistant coach at Sacred Heart University from 2000 to 2002, leading the face-off and defensive units.
As a student-athlete at Fairfield, Basti helped the Stags to a MAAC regular season championship and two ECAC Tournament titles. He was also a member of the 1996 and 1997 MAAC championship teams. Basti graduated from Fairfield in 1999 with degrees in politics and history and returned to complete his Master’s Degree in education/social studies in 2002.
